Child prophylaxis

How often does my child need to go to the dentist?

The intervals at which a child needs to visit the dentist depend largely on their oral hygiene at home and the condition of their teeth. If oral hygiene is good, a child should have a child prophylaxis every 6 months.

What is part of child prophylaxis?

Child prophylaxis covers several aspects. Oral hygiene instructions and tips on caring for teeth are discussed with the parents. An oral hygiene status is determined. New, permanent molars (molars) are protected by a fissure sealant and all teeth are fluoridated.

What is a fissure sealant?

A fissure sealant is, as the name suggests, a protective layer that protects the fissure at the crown of the tooth. Fissure sealing is part of the statutory individual prophylaxis for children and is covered by health insurance.

Why do you need fissure sealants?

Fissures are particularly vulnerable to caries. Food debris collects on the tooth and bacteria enter the fissure. The complicated fissure anatomy makes cleaning very difficult and the bacteria can multiply in peace.

When should fissure sealants be applied?

Fissure sealants should be placed on permanent molars. To protect the new teeth, the child should receive a sealant after eruption.

Is part of the tooth damaged during fissure sealing?

Fissure sealing does not damage the tooth. The sealing process is created by simply etching the fissure and then applying the material.
