What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are a way of permanently filling gaps in the dentition where otherwise only removable dentures would be possible. Basically, a dental implant is a type of titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone under local anesthesia. An implant replaces the lost natural tooth root. A tooth-colored crown/bridge or prosthesis is then attached to the dental implants.

Who benefits from implants?

Implants are suitable for replacing a single tooth as well as several teeth. Toothless patients in particular benefit enormously from implants. It is therefore possible to guarantee these patients with fixed teeth a significant increase in quality of life with the help of implants.

Patients who only want to replace individual teeth also have a great advantage with implants. It is no longer necessary to grind down the neighboring tooth to replace the missing tooth. A ground tooth is always a weak point in the mouth and even with a perfect restoration, the risk of losing a ground tooth is significantly higher. Another advantage of implants is the fact that the bone in the area of the missing tooth no longer recedes with an implant. A tooth gap that has not been restored with an implant causes the bone to recede further and further over the years. It is therefore more difficult to place an implant in a gap that has existed for years. Ideally, an implant is placed 3-4 months after the loss of a tooth.

Computer-guided implantation

What is computer-guided implantation?

With the help of the latest three-dimensional X-ray technology, a three-dimensional scan of the teeth and suitable software, it is possible to perform computer-guided implant placement. Computer-guided, navigated implantology enables us in our dental practice in Bochum to place the implant in almost all cases without surgery, a scalpel or cutting open. This is the idea of the digitized patient.

How does computer-guided implantation work?

Prior to implantation, our dentists analyze the available bone and the nerve courses. The future prosthesis is then planned in detail. Based on this planning, a template is created which is used for the implantation. The template ensures that the implant is placed in exactly the same position as the implant was previously planned. In this way, low-risk implant placement can be guaranteed. As the implant position in the bone is defined by the template, we can place the implant through the gum. It is no longer necessary to cut open the bone to inspect it surgically.

What are the new implantation methods?

A 3D X-ray image and a 3D scan of the teeth can be used to carefully plan the position of the implant. As a result, our implants can be placed in a short time frame without incisions or major surgical procedures. In these cases, not even a suture is necessary.

What do you need to look out for with a dental implant?

In order to preserve an implant for a long time, it must be cleaned daily at home, just like a natural tooth. Regular professional dental cleanings in the dental practice should be carried out. Unlike our natural teeth, implants do not have an immune system. Implants are therefore generally more susceptible to bacteria, making it all the more important to keep them clean. We will be happy to advise you on the most effective way to clean your implants so that you can enjoy them for a long time.

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth, but unfortunately not everyone has a good experience with them. Some people can experience complications such as infection, nerve damage or implant failure, which can be both painful and expensive.

Does a dental implant cause pain?

The implantation itself is performed under anesthesia. The patient feels a pressure during the procedure. The implantation is usually painless. If a navigated implantation is performed, as explained in the article above, the entire treatment can even be carried out without cutting. Not even a suture is necessary in these cases.

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift is a treatment method for the upper jaw to raise the maxillary sinus a little. This is done to create more space for the implant in the bone. In most cases, this procedure is not necessary and can often be avoided with a 3D X-ray and computer-guided implantology. If a sinus lift is necessary for your dental implant, a distinction is made between internal and external sinus lifts. While the internal sinus lift is a minor procedure, the external sinus lift poses different challenges. In our practice in Bochum, we try to utilize the patient's own bone as much as possible to avoid a sinus lift altogether. If you are looking for more information on sinus lifts, you will find an interesting page here.

General information on implants.

Which implants are recommended?

Implants made of titanium have proven to be the best dental implants for many decades. Numerous scientific studies have shown that titanium implants are extremely well tolerated. There are also ceramic implants, which have also been well studied, but there are not as many long-term studies as with titanium implants. In our dental practice in Bochum, we only use implants from the brand manufacturer and world market leader Straumann and strictly reject cheap imitations from abroad!

Implantation procedure:

The dental implant procedure is divided into different stages.

Investigation

The first step is for our dentist to carry out a thorough examination of the jaw to ensure that the patient is suitable for an implant. Alternatives are discussed and if everything indicates that the benefits of an implant outweigh the risks, the next phase is initiated.

Planning

In the next step, various digital treatment documentations are then carried out. These include a 3D scan of the teeth, a 3D X-ray image and, if required, photos. The 3D scan of the teeth is then printed into a 3D model using a 3D printer. With the physical 3D model, the dentist can visualize the prosthetic tooth situation in an articulator. Here we already plan the dental crown(s) that will be screwed onto the implants. In this way, we can ensure that there are no surprises with the prosthetics even after the implant has been placed. An orientation splint is fabricated on the 3D model. Ideally, this is not used and only serves as reassurance for the doctor if there are problems with the computer-navigated system during the operation. The operation is then planned and rehearsed step by step using special software. Every step of the operation is planned digitally in advance in order to be optimally prepared.

Operation

As soon as all planning has been completed, the operation is performed under local anesthesia. With our systems, it is possible in almost all cases to dispense with an incision. As soon as the implant is placed, the healing phase begins. Depending on the bone situation, this can take 3-4 months. In some cases, an immediate restoration is possible, but we try to avoid this as the risk of implant loss is considerably higher.

After the healing phase, the patient finally receives the long-awaited dentures.

For whom are implants not suitable?

Dental implants are generally very well tolerated. Especially if a high-quality system is used and the treatment is carried out according to the latest standards. However, there are general medical reasons for exclusion such as osteoporosis or uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. At our dental practice in Bochum, we do everything possible to guarantee you the best possible treatment safety.
